Important Facts You Need To Know About Antibiotics

Little Pills Of Joy

Antibiotics are very important drugs and they are mainly used to treat infections or diseases caused by bacteria. They act as medications that will either destroy the bacteria or hamper the growth of the said pathogen.

It is important to note that Antibiotics do not cure or treat viral infections such as coughs or seasonal flu. In this article, I will go over some important facts that you need to know about Antibiotics.

What Are They?

When used correctly, antibiotics can help save a lot of lives. Their main purpose is to either destroy bacteria that is found in your body or hamper their growth.

Our bodies are already quite adept in killing invading pathogens. This includes viruses, parasites, and even bacteria. Our white blood cells are usually equipped to fight them and in some cases, we do not need the help of antibiotics or any strong medications.

However, there are times that the bacteria levels in your body are too excessive that the immune system may not have the power to kill them off completely. In this case, the use of antibiotics will be necessary.

The first ever antibiotic that was created was Penicillin. There are still some antibiotics based from it that are available today such as amoxicillin, ampicillin, and Penicillin G.

How Do They Work?

Antibiotics work in two ways. They either act as a bactericidal antibiotic which means that they kill off any of the bad bacteria that is present in your body or they can also act as a bacteriostatic antibiotic, which means they hamper the growth and, therefore, the spreading of bacteria in your body.

How Do You Use It?

Most antibiotics are prescription medications which means that you would have to consult your physician first before using them.

Your doctor would examine you and would give you certain antibiotics based on the diagnosis. Remember, these medications are only useful if your condition is of bacterial origin.

Your physician would require you to drink the antibiotic at a specific time that they’ve plotted for you. Even if you feel better during the course, you still have to complete the full cycle just to make sure that the bacterial invaders have been killed off successfully.

You must follow your doctor’s orders to a tee. Overuse of antibiotics would lead to bacterial resistance which means that the pathogen would become resistant to the medication- leaving your antibiotics useless.

There are also some instances where doctors would prescribe antibiotics to prevent certain infection, as is the case before surgery.

Side Effects

If you just follow your doctor’s orders, you will feel little to no side effects. The side effects that are commonly associated with the use of antibiotics include vomiting, diarrhea, rash, nausea, upset stomach, premature ejaculation, among many others.

Resistance

Incorrect use or abuse of antibiotics would lead to bacterial resistance. This is a phenomenon where the bacterial pathogen would no longer respond well to the medications you are taking.

The overuse of antibiotics is actually quite common which is why doctors are quite wary of prescribing antibiotics simply because people tend to use them more often than not.
